Is it worth investing money to buy a telescopic seat post?

Is it worth buying a telescopic saddle holder for my mountain bike? What advantages does it offer? Is it a necessary innovation?

Let’s start with the simplest, what is a seat post? A component of the bicycle? A Mexican dish? No, the saddle support is the bar that joins the frame of our bicycle to the saddle. It serves to adjust its height and therefore adjust our position on the bike.

This element has been solved and once adjusted it cannot be changed while we are running, although surely there is someone with enough experience to do it, but it would not be your thing.

What does a telescopic seat post offer us?

The telescopic seatpost is an innovation that has been implanted in the world of enduro and downhill for several years and that for some years is gradually finding its place in rallying, cross-country skiing and even MTB marathons.

The telescopic seat post allows us to change the height of the saddle while we move. This allows us to lower the center of gravity of our body on the bicycle.

The main advantage of changing the height of the moving saddle with a telescopic seat post is that it gives us greater control of the bicycle to cope with greater safety and speed in technical descents or on complicated and irregular terrain.

What are the disadvantages of telescopic seat posts?
Obviously, not all are advantages. When deciding whether it is worth buying a seat or not, you should also consider the main disadvantages, which are the following:

Price
Weight
Retention

What do you need to keep in mind to buy a telescopic seat post?

In addition to the price, maintenance or use that will be given, in relation to the technical characteristics of the seat post, a series of elements must be taken into consideration before deciding on one or the other.

Seatpost diameter:
The first thing we will have to look at is the diameter of the seat post we have already mounted on our bicycle. In this way we will know what size we need. Depending on the model there are different sizes: 27.2, 30.9, 31.6, 34.9 mm, etc.

The tour:
As for the fork stroke, depending on the type of mountain bike we like, we will have to choose the path of our seatpost.

The path is the depth, measured in millimeters, which we can lower or raise the seat post to vary the height of the saddle as we move. The most common telescopic seat posts offer a path that varies between 35 and 200 millimeters.

Height:
It is necessary to calculate whether the minimum insertion required for the seat post you intend to buy adapts to the size of the bicycle frame. Small size or very sloping frames can cause problems.

Wiring:
In case of taking a seatpost whose remote control works with cable, we will have to decide whether to transport the internal or external wiring. That is, if we don’t care if the remote control cables go out of the frame or we prefer them inside. In the latter case, it is necessary to keep in mind that not all frames support the internal guide of the cables.

Seatpost recoil:
Depending on our riding position on the bicycle and the geometry of the frame we mount, it may need a recoil seat post or not.
